InGame 10/31/2017 Meeting

Topic 0: Pregame chatter about Overwatch games. No update yet on our inquiry into the eligibility of the top-500 player in our last game. In our next game we plan to use Discord for team chat during the game. Alex will watch during the game and provide minimum coaching during the game. Because what we are going to do is not explicitly enshrined in official rules for the tournament we should have a discussion while we are streaming our warm up about why we are not using in game chat.

This is the last week for Overwatch tournament.

Topic 1: Research updates: Lucas and Steven interviews are wrapping up. They have lots of data they need to work through and are moving to start transcribing / recruiting transcribers.

Topic 2: Alex has submitted our list of speakers to Selma S. Could only submit faculty recommendations to Selma because the SICE Colloquium Series only brings in faculty. But we will try to bring in an industry professional for the Lundy Hall Game Research Symposium we are planning for next June. Alex is negotiating that possibility with Nathan Ensmenger, who is facilitating a budget for our planning efforts.

Topic 3: Should InGame become a student group or create a shell organization for participation in formal student organizations on campus? Or should we intensify our coordination with IU Gaming for resources and facilities that we do not have access to? Consensus: We should ask more of IU Gaming. We need them to post fliers for us for recruitment purposes. This practically provides an opportunity to develop a productive, meaningful and mutual relationship with IU Gaming that future group members can replicate in the future.

Topic 4: Luddy Hall Event

  • Video game Triathlon (Iris needs to type up an explanation of what ThinkPlay did and send to Alex)
  • Exhibition space for local game studios
  • Food for everyone
  • Bring in other esports teams
  • Research panels
  • When should the symposium occur?
  • Need to avoid PAX East and GDC

Should solicit formal proposals from groups/entities/presenters to help facilitate organization of a program 45+ days in advance of the event.

Topic 5: One final road block in the quest to formalize IU eSports teams. Last time around (5 years ago) Rec Sports protest institutionalizations of eSports on the basis that it doesn’t seem ‘athletic’ or ‘active’ enough. We are about to formally file a letter with Rec Sports to recognize eSports, it will include the signatures of important people across campus who support our request. If they approve the request we should be granted access to resources and organizational priority in maintenance requests. Moreover it would facilitate the legitimization of existing eSports teams who already self-identify as IU affiliated (even when they do t have authorization to use IU IP like the IU logo).

Topic 6: Thinking about future tournament events.

One of the things we’ve learned from tournament play this semester from both Overwatch and DOTA and research on these spaces in general: social amicability affects the game. In private discussions we’re collectively taking note of toxic behavior and we can foresee undesirable outcomes for everyone involved if the group does nothing and says nothing about these observances. This weekend we’re going to sit down after Overwatch practice and before DOTA practice and conduct a working lunch to draft a kind of code of conduct or form that otherwise codifies what we believe to be sportsman and unsportsmanlike behavior. We hope to use this as a means of facilitating conversation with people who say and act in ways that compromise the trust that teammates need to cultivate in order to work well together. We all want InGame to be a place where people can play and have fun, but that fun shouldn’t compromise the integrity of the space for other players. Moreover, we should be able to foster a place to play that can be at once expressive and educational. We can learn about different ways of playing and communicating with other people in ways that are on the whole productive. But this cannot happen if there is no attention to words and actions that—in the common words of our time—create a toxic environment. Of course, it is impossible to create an environment that is safe for everyone, but everyone at the meeting today is principally interested in fostering an environment about games and play where sexist, racist, homophobic, and ableist microaggressions are not tolerated.
